If we had to choose a favourite ice cream van in London (when we would have to make this choice, we aren’t sure, but let’s say we did) we would choose the 1970’s dream Alfie, which in 2014 decided that it was no longer going to be an ice cream van, but was going to be instead The Cheese Truck and with that London street food scene found its game changer.
Created by Mathew Carver, The Cheese Truck does what it says on the tin it champions the best British cheese with its food porn – aka grilled cheese sandwiches – it’s sold over 150,000 and melted over 20 tonnes of cheese. It’s fine to get a little excited by them. We also have an early Christmas present for you because in February, Mathew is opening his first permanent restaurant so you can permanently get your cheese fix.
Opening in February in Camden Stables Market, it’s basically a cheese lover’s dream – cheese for breakfast, cheese for lunch, cheese for pudding. If you love cheese, you’re going to love this. Festival favourites such as the Cropwell Bishop Stilton, bacon and pear chutney sandwich will return as well as new dishes. There’s a Mexican take on a fondue, a breakfast poutine and for pudding a dark chocolate ice cream sundae made with honey and creamy ewes milk cheese, Beenleigh Blue. They’ll also be championing urban cheese makers who are producing cheese within the M25 including La Latteria, Gingra Dairy in Peckham and Kupros who produce 100% English sheep’s milk halloumi.
The restaurant will feature exposed brick walls, a marble topped bar and floor to ceiling display fridges which will be home to over thirty of Mathew’s favourite British cheeses and a changing selection of twenty craft beers.
In our humble (and cheese obsessed, so, bias) opinion, this is one of the best Christmas presents we could have asked for.
