Cast your mind back to 2015, not that long ago, but so much has happened in 2016 it definitely feels much longer. Anyway if you keep up to date with your restaurant openings, which hopefully with us you do, then you’ll remember the opening of the critically acclaimed restaurant, Portland. Well now the team: restaurateurs, Will Lander and Daniel Morgenthau and chef, Merlin Labron-Johnson are back with the opening of Clipstone.
You’ll find it on the corner of Clipstone Street just down the road from Portland in location of the year, Fitzrovia. The 52 cover restaurant will be minimal in design, it’s all about textures, soft touches and subtle features with reclaimed stone tops sitting alongside natural linens. There’s seating outside too, so let’s hope this weather sticks around!
At just 24, Merlin took Portland to Michelin-starred fame and now he’ll move between the two restaurants as Executive Chef. Taking on the position of Head Chef will be Merlin’s sous chef Stuart Andrew (previously at Lyles and La Gazzetta), whilst Portland will also have a new Head Chef in the form of Edoardo Pellicano.
Collaborating with his chefs, Merlin’s menu features cold cuts, summer plates, larger sharing dishes and sourdough flatbreads. Dishes include Lardo di Colonnata with caramelised walnuts; mussels, sake, coriander and olive oil; clam, parsley, crème fraiche and garlic flatbread and ravioli of hay-baked carrot and ricotta with brown butter and hazelnuts. Things are just as adventurous for puddings, forget your usual chocolate fondant instead there’ll be lemon and sheep’s milk ice cream with extra virgin olive oil, Rousillon apricot, amaretto, mascarpone and camomile and the ultimate Paris-Brest. Wines showing a variety of winemaking methods and styles will be on tap and will be accompanied by homemade sodas, soft drinks including Yuzu-ade and Watermelon ice-tea. Open daily, you’ll be able to book for lunch, head there for brunch on Saturday and come the evening it’ll be walk in only.
If this is 2016 then we’re already excited for what this trio might bring in 2017.
