Corazón: Mexican Comfort Food

Winter is the time for comfort food.  It’s just a fact of life and this month a new kind of hearty food is coming to Poland Street in the form of Corazón taqueria, it’s serving up Mexican comfort food inspired by Mexico City’s Condesa neighbourhood.

Created by Laura Sheffield, (a Texan who has been in London for over ten years managing places like The Riding House Café), Corazón will be focusing on a selection of ten signature tacos and daily specials. Taco fillings include the likes of chorizo verde (house made green chorizo, confit onions and salsa verde); duck carnitas (confit of duck in root beer, pickled onion, coriander and salsa verde) and barbacoa (12-hour slow roast lamb rib, neck and shoulder, pasilla rub, new potatoes, mint and tomatillo salsa).  Other dishes include ceviches, tostadas and salads. Drop in at lunch for Torta ahogada – not sure what that is? It’s a ‘drowned sandwich’ of pork carnitas, chile de àrbol salsa and pickled onions. Puddings will include the likes of tres leches cake with cajeta ice cream.  As we said comfort is what it’s all about.

The weekend brunch menu sounds exactly like the sort of thing that will drag us out of our beds on a cold winter day too. We’re talking about Huevos Benedict – ham hock hash, caramelised onions, eggs and green chilli hollandaise; Divorced eggs and buttermilk blue corn pancakes served with caramelised banana, toasted pecans and cajeta.

The drinks list will be succinct, alongside side Mexican and American beers, quality margaritas, agave and rum based cocktails like the Cazuela – a sharing cocktail made from tequila, mezcal, fresh fruits and green tea. They will also make Tepache – a lightly alcoholic fermented pineapple juice, which will come in flavours such as apple and chipotle and orange and tamarind.

Katy Manolescue of Article Design is looking after the interiors. The faded art deco aesthetic of Los Angeles and Mexico City is seen in the mint, avocado and white shades, reclaimed terracotta tile floors and the concrete topped terrazzo bar.

Time to get eating.
