Chelsea denizen Daphne’s turns 50 this year and following a brief closure for a spot of cosmetic surgery, it reopened this month sporting a nifty refresh courtesy of interiors guru Martin Brudnizki. But celebrations don’t end there. Owner Richard Caring has enlisted 50 British celebrities to each design a Venetian mask in a nod to the venue’s Italian heritage.
And no there’s not a cast member of Made in Chelsea in sight. Instead, the stellar line-up of stage, screen and fashion includes Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Wakeley, Joan Collins, Harry Styles, Henry Holland, Jessie J, Mary Katrantzou, Giles Deacon, Dame Shirley Bassey, Amber Le Bon, Jennifer Saunders, Richard E Grant, Jade Jagger and original it girl, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.
The masks will be first showcased on 24th June at Daphne’s Venetian Masked Ball and will then be displayed in the restaurant for a month after which they will be auctioned off in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
Daphne’s, one of London’s original celebrity haunts and certainly The Firehouse of its time, was launched back in 1964 by theatre agent Daphne Rye, also credited with discovering Richard Burton and developing the careers of Kenneth More and Honor Blackman.
