Upon first reading about this next electronic music venue, I thought when it said wasteland it was nodding to a land populated by people who’d had one drink too many. However, a closer scroll led me to the understanding that it’s actually a studio above a print factory on an industrial estate. There’s definitely something about electronic music that goes hand in hand with slightly eerie looking, derelict buildings.
Sorry, I’m not really painting FOLD to you in the most appetising light, but it does actually look seriously cool (not as cool as me though, using the phrase “seriously cool”). FOLD is a 24-hour dance floor, collectively run audio-visual performance space and studio (/glorified club) ready to make all of your electronic dreams come true.
You can invite all your mates, because there’s a 600-boogier capacity and you don’t have to spend your night awash with fear of how to get home because the location benefits from 24-hour access to the Jubilee line and London Overground. What’s more, the building location means the sound system has freedom to let loose, meaning you wave goodbye to the problem of sound complaints and the nosey neighbours who say they won’t complain (and then come midnight their knuckle wrapping on your front door has started to sound like a beat from the music playing).
Co-founder Seb Glover says: “What we have created at FOLD is a new home, tucked away from the pressures of the city, a place where you can listen to extended sets on a tuned soundsystem tailored to the specifications of the room to maximise the experience of the space”. And to begin the booming of the speakers will be a launch party (any excuse for a party, right?) featuring Homodrop and Resis’dance, techno kids on the block Make Me, electronic media Test Pressing and many more.
There are a whole host of advantages to this venue – we all know the pain of that dreaded cloak room wait, when all you want to do is get your Flo Rida on, circa apple bottom jean days. Now, you can! FOLD has lockers located around the space for a speedy entrance, alongside the ability to reserve a personal locker. So, you’ll be in the five purpose-built music studios before you know it.
Oh, and perhaps the most important part – there’s air conditioning!
FOLD can be found at Gillian House, Stephenson Street, E16 4SA and tickets for the launch party can be purchased here.
