Today, Leadenhall Market welcomes a new take on Japanese and Mexican fast food: Hai Street Kitchen, the UK’s first Japanese burrito bar, a new fast casual dining concept.
Executive Chef is Takao Iinuma, who worked alongside famous Japanese Chef Masaharu Morimoto for many years and his core offering is Japanese burritos and bowls made from fresh, sustainably sourced ingredients.
Designed along the lines of a burrito bar, diners first choose whether they want a burrito style sushi rice roll or bowl (rice or salad). Next is the choice of filling, which includes Chicken or Fish katsu, Grilled pork belly, Salmon pastrami, Flank steak or Roasted carrot. Then you add a selection of homemade sauces, toppings and crunchy pieces of fried garlic, shallots or yucca chips.
A theatre-style kitchen allows diners to see their food being prepared and Iinuma has also created a complementary range of side dishes including Renkon chips, Tomato bisque and Miso soup.
Hai Street Kitchen & Co is owned by Genji, LLC. a subsidiary of Peace Dining Corporation, which is the largest sushi provider to Whole Foods Market. A US opening is planned for Philadelphia this spring and two more sites are scheduled for the UK later this year.
