What’s the story of yakitori at Jidori? The team behind Jidori, the yakitori restaurant in Dalston, have started work on their new venue in Covent Garden. And what’s more, there’s going to be karaoke! Sign us right up, our’s will be a bowl of shiitake mushroom and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Yakitori, the popular Japanese street food snack, has taken off out East, so it was only a matter of time before the craze swept into the West End. The new location, on Catherine Street, will see Head Chef Shunta Matsubara adding his unusual twist to yakitori over three floors. Owners Natalie Lee-Joe and Brett Redman have again combined forces with architect Giles Reid to create a similar clean, wood accented aesthetic, complimented by pastel details, to their Dalston restaurant.
The menu will build on the success of their Dalston ‘specials board’ and the team have worked closely to extend this with a number of small and large plates. These dishes will compliment the traditional yakitori, with dishes including Tsukune (minced chicken with egg yolk), katsu curry Scotch egg, okra-nomiyaki, and ginger ice cream with miso caramel and sweet potato crisps.
With Matsubara manning the bespoke yakitori grill made by century-old Tokyo artisanal grill makers Kama-Asa Shoten the emphasis is on seasonal local produce, with free-range chicken sourced from Yorkshire and sustainable charcoal from London Log Company.
And let’s not forget the karaoke. It wouldn’t be a true Japanese experience were there not a private dining karaoke room and the room will be available for hire for up to 12 people. What’s not to love about Jidori Covent Garden?
