Jimmy. Carr? Fallon? Kimmel? Ok, ok, enough of the brunette comedians (although thinking about it, they all do look weirdly similar) and on to another Jimmy who makes us very happy: Jimmy Garcia, pop-up legend. Fresh from The Lodge in Clapham, Jimmy is taking charge of all things edible at the newly renovated Queens: Skate – Dine – Bowl in Queensway, West London, settling in to his first permanent central London home.
Jimmy’s Diner, as it will be known, will provide respite to bowlers and skaters who are making the most of the 9,000ft2 indoor ice rink, 12 state of the art bowling lanes, pop-up cinema and table football. But on to the food. The diner itself will be quintessentially British, paying homage to the venue’s heritage – Queens opened back in the thirties – with hearty sharing dishes, moreish snacks and a big focus on burgers. The space has been designed by Design LSM (Chai Ki, Cinnamon Bazaar and Mustard) and is a contemporary take on retro; mustard banquettes, turquoise chairs and bright art work across the white tiled walls.
Dishes particularly catching our eye include golden Cheddar balls; breadcrumbed balls of mature Cheddar, hot wings with BBQ sauce and party platters of cheese nachos topped with pulled pork or smashed avocado. Burger-wise, very British names have been given to combinations like 14-hour slow-roasted pork, Red Leicester, BBQ sauce, piccalilli and gherkins (the ‘Parliamentary Pulled Pork’) and Aberdeen Angus beef patty with Jimmy’s beef brisket, Cheddar, crispy back bacon, burger sauce, gherkins, lettuce and tomato (‘The Winston’).
If burgers aren’t your thing then the classic mains include sausage and mash, fish and chips and ‘The Queens Mac’; macaroni cheese with optional additions of wild mushrooms, chorizo or lobster. All the food can be brought over to you rink-side or at your lane, so if you’re on a bit of a roll with the strikes then a little thing like food won’t be enough to interrupt you. There certainly won’t be any spares…
