The Romans introduced us to one of our favourite things- pubs, when they came along with the tabernae which were going to be the predecessor to the alehouses, inns, pubs and coaching houses that came after. And Londoners took to them, like us millennials now supposedly take to gin and avocados, they were all over them – at one point there were 38 pubs on Oxford Street alone. In amongst them all were the taverns, a place to socialise, drink and do business and now there is a new tavern coming to London, The Wigmore.
Created by The Langham London and the team behind Artesian, The Wigmore is named after Robert Harley, Baron of Wigmore of Herefordshire, 1st Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer – quite the man. Designed by Martini Brudnizki (Aquavit, Sexy Fish, The Ivy Chelsea Garden) The Wigmore which is housed in a former bank, will have a luxury, polished feel to it and Harley’s coat of arms will be seen throughout, giving a nod to the history of taverns.
Food is overseen by Michel Roux Jr with dishes including raised veal and ham pie; devilled lamb’s kidneys and paprika-glazed short rib with bone barrow crumb. Drinks will come from the Artesian team and will include punch, house hoptails and The Wigmore’s own house ‘Saison’ brewed with Bermondsey’s Brew by Numbers.
The next chapter in the tavern’s history is beginning this summer.
