March Openings

So the seasons are changing, hopefully we can now say goodbye to winter and hello to spring, and welcome in the new restaurants and hotels which are set to launch this month. From floating hotels, to fusion restaurants, all day dining inspired by members’ clubs and the relaunch of one of Soho’s finest. Here are some of The Handbook’s favourites

Throughout his travelling renowned chef, Cyrus Todiwala realised that there was a wonderful relationship between the flavours and ideas of Portuguese, Goan, Brazilian and Indian cuisine. The result?  Fusion -restaurant Assado, in Waterloo. Having opened this weekend, Assado will be offering casual dining and dishes include everything from curries such as Caril de Camarao a’la Goa – the staple curry of Goa to Pastel de Nata  to  the sticky- sweet, traditional custard tarts of Portugal! Open now

Upper Richmond Road in Putney will soon be home to Bibo an Italian restaurant, which will take up residence in the former site of Wallace & Co. Chef Chris Beverley and Rebecca Mascarenhas (Sam’s Brasserie and kitchen W8) are behind the modern Italian, which will be serving up dishes such as Pappardelle, rabbit and Prosecco ragu, salt cod and pannacotta with caramel oranges – delicious!   6th March

Restaurateur Bal Thind’s is bringing tapas to the table with the launch of Bravas, which is set to provide London with the very best of modern Spanish cuisine. With a menu curated by talented chef Victor Garvey, Bravas will  offer up various tasty plates including Jerusalem artichoke canelone with Medjool dates, grapefruit and beurre noisette and seared Mediterranean sea bass fillet with Donostiarra sauce. Located in the vibrant St Katherine’s Dock we see Bravas being a big hit with those looking for traditional classic tapas. 17th March

Time for a history lesson: between 1883 and 1901 a Mr Edwin Brady ran a pub called The Hole in the Wall on Borough High Street, unlike your average pub though, The Hole in the Wall was also a museum and Brady exhibited a large collection of stuffed animals and skeletons. Things came to an end though when Brady asked for corpses. Fast forward 113 years and Parched Pubs are opening their first restaurant on the site, suitably called Edwin. The restaurant which will be open every day for lunch and supper and brunch at weekends will be serving dishes such as clam and mussels, rabbit with polenta and grilled seafood bouillabaisse. 17th March

Hide and Seed

Boutique hotel, The Lodge on Upper Richmond road is about to launch its new restaurant and bar – Hide and Seed. Focusing on flavoursome game and fresh fish, the restaurant will serve dishes which are influenced by Head Chef Ricardo Soares’ Portuguese heritage; expect to find Cabrito Goat and fish and bread served in a coffee broth on the menu. And here’s a little fact, the vegetables are even grown on the hotel’s farm! 28th March

For those looking to broaden their world cuisine, then the Georgian tavern – Marani on Curzon Street is just the place. Celebrating the country’s legendary cuisine – which is a smorgasbord of  Eastern and Western flavours, the focus will be around the idea of ‘supra’ feasting and hospitality (since Georgians believe that all guests have been sent by God) and so chef Tekuna Gachechiladze will revive authentic recipes of "supra" feasts to showcase a lighter, more modern style of Georgian food. And for those who don’t know, Marani means ‘wine cellar’ and the tavern gives a  nod to Georgia’s wine heritage  as it will  house the largest selection of Georgian wines this side of the Caucasus Mountains! 3rd March

One Kensington

The latest addition to the Tamarind Collection (they’re behind Imli Street and Tamarind of Mayfair) is One Kensington. An all –day dining venue, inspired by the exclusivity, decadence and glamour of private members’ clubs – but most importantly without being a member’s club! They will be serving breakfast right through to late night cocktails and dinners – hurrah! We’re particularly excited to drink Champagne at the elevated bar overlooking Kensington Palace Gardens. Launches week 10th March

Poppy’s Place

The opening of Poppy’s Place this month looks to make an interesting addition to Fulham’s restaurant scene. Working around a 'farm to table' ethos , head chef Alastair Pritchard has created a changing seasonal menu that will serve up informal brunch dishes before being transformed to a cosy candle lit dinner venue at night. With dishes including  hash browns and hot smoked salmon with horseradish and a special focus on steak in the evening this is sure to quickly become your new favourite weekend hang out.  10th March

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel

This year take a little boat trip with a difference- the difference being that it doesn’t move anywhere and it is a luxury hotel.  That’s right, the Sunborn London Yacht hotel which is floating adjacent to the ExCel exhibition centre is set to include 138 spacious guest rooms, complete with balconies and floor to ceiling windows overlooking the river, as well as a bar and lounge, fine-dining restaurant, various meeting spaces including an auditorium, and  a 3-level event venue with terraces facing towards Canary Wharf. March

The Wright Brothers Soho

The Wright Brothers Soho has been given a bit of a makeover and this month sees the relaunch. Shayne Brady of Brady Williams has redesigned the interior to include banquet seating an upstairs restaurant, standalone bar and private dining area. They are also unveiling a semi- private dining room, ‘The Cage’ and before you get any ideas, it refers to a supersized  structure modeled on a lobster trap which the Wright Brothers use on their oyster farm. The clever bit is that the cage walls can be folded into different configurations depending on whether you want an intimate booth or open dining space – nifty huh? The menu has also been given a bit of a shakeup by the newly appointed chef Sasha Ziverts, and they are expanding the meat section with dishes such as chargrilled Wagyu beef bavette steak with half a grilled lobster and fries. Sounds good to us! 3rd March

Workshop Coffee Co

Coffee lovers rejoice at the news that the Workshop Coffee Co are opening their third London store! Continuing to reflect the company’s mission to provide clean, fresh and ethically sourced coffee to the public, their new Holborn location is set to be as popular as their other outlets. The minimalist interior designed by Ink Associates in this shop means all attention is focused on the coffee that’s freshly roasted on the site. The Holborn branch will also sell the chain’s trademark coffee and grinders for those who want to take their cup home with them.  17th March
