No 197 Chiswick Fire Station: New Neighbourhood Favourite

What’s in a name? Sometimes not a lot really. Take Sexy Fish for example; doesn’t reveal a lot. So actually it’s refreshing when venues skip the fuss and keep things simple. Especially when the name reflects the feel, aesthetic and ethos of the place.

Enter No 197 Chiswick Fire Station, the fourth venue from independent bar group Darwin & Wallace. The people behind No 11 Pimlico Road, No 32 The Old Town, Clapham and, most recently, Richmond’s No 1 Duke Street have stayed West and are opening the new all-day bar and restaurant in Chiswick at the end of the month. With a name like this, it’s no surprise they’re embracing the character and history of the site – no fireman poles but a neighbourly feel which residents of W4 will welcome with open arms. The group have a knack of choosing venues in the leafier, more villagey areas of London so Chiswick was a natural choice.

Inside, No 197 Chiswick Fire Station will have a utilitarian feel, unfussy and sophisticated much like their name. A colour palette of pale pink, chalky white and soft greys and artwork from a gallery in Stoke Newington has been selected by designer Lou Davies to compliment the more rustic work by architect Lionel Real de Azua, a team that has worked together on the look and feel of the bar group for 3 years. A neglected courtyard space has been rediscovered and will be a main focal point of the restaurant, especially in the coming Summer months whilst indoor furniture will include comfy sofas, oak chairs and a central ‘cake table’ – the existing main focus in No 1 Duke Street and No 32 The Old Town.

Much like the other venues, diners can expect all-day options, making it suitable for whether you are just wanting a coffee and pastry in the morning, bowl of homemade soup at lunch, or a stiffer drink in the evening. Cocktails are described as ‘classics with personality’ and made from house made syrups alongside local craft beers and carefully considered wine menu. Food is local and seasonal where possible, too – a new favourite local haunt, even if Chiswick isn’t home.

No 197 Chiswick Fire Station: Opens 26th April, 197-199 Chiswick High Road, Chiswick, W4 2DR www.no197chiswickfirestation.com
