A glass of Prosecco? Mmm. Carafe? Sure! The perfect solution for when a bottle seems a little ambitious but you could definitely handle more than just a glass, carafes are getting the attention they deserve this side of the English Channel and it comes in the form of a dedicated Franciacorta and Prosecco Bar, opening in the newly unveiled POLPO Knightsbridge in Harvey Nichols – and The Handbook is the first to tell you about it.
Loved for their Venetian small plates, POLPO has always brought Londoners the finest Italian ingredients and authentic dishes, in humble, fuss-free surroundings. The new bar in Harvey Nichols’ Fifth Floor will be no different, despite being just metres from the department store’s luxury designer goods. Aiming to enlighten the self-proclaimed Prosecco lover, the bar will serve a wide range of sparkling Italian wines with familiar favourites as well as new names like the Ca’ del Bosco’s Franciacorta Cuvee Prestige – classically produced and nutty in flavour, with hints of apricot. For those who are unfamiliar, Franciacorta comes from the Province of Brescia, Northern Italy, and is prepared in the same way as Champagne.
The carefully curated drinks menu includes a specially imported Prosecco from Dal Bello – exclusively for POLPO Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge which is perfectly complimented by the fried stuffed olives. Other foodie highlights come in the form of ciccheti; think fig and prosciutto crostini, zucchini arancini and slightly more substantial small plates like deep fried polenta-crusted meatballs. If straight-up bubbles aren’t really your thing or you want to try something else, a concise Prosecco-based cocktail menu includes POLPO’s take on some of the classics; the Twinkle gets the POLPO touch with rosemary-infused vodka, elderflower and Piedmontese 100% Sparkling Chardonnay Blanc de Blanc.
The location of the bar means it’s the perfect shopping stop-off for the slightly more discerning shopper who wants more than an overpriced and overrated glass of Champagne. Antique stem glassware and a neon sign reading ‘Prosecco’ give the bar a feeling of effortless cool and no doubt it will become as much a drinking destination as it will a convenient shopping stop-off – reservations are available 12-5pm with tables and seats at the bar kept for walk-ins from 5pm onwards.
