You know who was good at preserving things? The Ancient Egyptians – they had that sussed. They’ve not been around for the last few thousand years though…they’re also not opening a deli/bistro. Tell you who is though, Manish Upton-Mishra, the man behind Crystal Palace’s Good Taste Deli which specialises in the finest things in life (cheese, charcuterie, beer and wine) and Ian Haigh, the acclaimed designer (Central Design Studio). Everything will be salted, pickled or cured and it’s aptly named Salt + Pickle.

Opening on Westow Hill in Crystal Palace, Salt + Pickle will specialise in preservation techniques, focusing on ingredients from small and independent local suppliers. You’ll find the likes of treacle-cured salmon homemade beef pastrami as well as a small, well-curated drinks list with plenty of beer from craft breweries like Gipsy Hill Brewery which is just down the road from them.

Making the most of natural materials, Salt + Pickle will have a minimalist interior, with space for thirty diners and a further ten at the bar. Splashes of geometrical colour will give it a modern edge whilst retaining a neighbourhood feel.

The Ancient Egyptians would definitely approve – well we think so, we can’t actually ask them…
