The Handbook

As September starts it's safe to say autumn is officially here, the back to school feeling has returned as everyone is returning from their holidays and the streets of London are starting to bustle again with the arrival of new restaurants, hotels and bars. From boutique hotels in Victoria to bars serving up a mix of science and cocktails in Bevis Marks, here is The Handbook’s guide to some of the best new venues opening this month.

The Artist Residence

Following on from their success in Brighton and Penzance, hoteliers Justin Salisbury and Charlotte Newbury are set to open their first London hotel this month, The Artist Residence. Situated in a former pub the hotel is a stone’s throw from Victoria station and features 10 rooms including two suites. Wanting to do away with the uniformity so often found in big hotels, each room is individually designed; think vintage tea crates and rustic wooden milking stools transformed into bedside tables and 1950’s Belgian work tables used as desks. As the name suggests art is also a big feature with Justin and Charlotte having chosen the collection from art fairs and independent galleries.  They’ve also teamed up with Michael Bremner from Brighton restaurant 64 Degrees, and will be serving up dishes such as Kimchi chicken wings with blue cheese. The hotel will also feature a cocktail lounge and garden. Opens 1st September

You might remember that back in January we told you about the opening of Michael Riemenschneider’s restaurant Canvas, in Marylebone. It was only a 20 cover restaurant and now due to its success they need to expand which is good news for everyone after a reservation! So now they are moving and heading south west to set up camp in Chelsea. Opens  2nd September

Basement Sate

It turns out there is a god, and they are solving our late night pudding cravings.  Opening in Soho and combining two of the best things, Basement Sate is going to be serving up cocktails and desserts, late into the night! Brought to us by Cathleen McGarry the co-owner of Sherry Butt in Paris, it’s the first of the kind in London, genius. Fleming and Howland are in charge of the design and  with low lighting and wooden snugs they’ve gone for a lovingly designed living room. With a 12 strong cocktail list and puddings to match the flavours, there is only one word for this… glorious! Opens 4th September

 Café Kaizen

East London is soon to come to Mayfair in the form of Café Kaizen. Dan Kapp and his team have been inspired by Spitalfield Markets and they are now bringing it to Hanover Square and giving it an Asian twist. The café and cocktail lounge will also feature an indoor market place or bar’ket which will be selling pieces from 20 fashion designers including military bespoke jackets by Pinky Laing and yoga street wear from IamVibes. On the food front the menu is inspired by the Spice Route and includes dim sum, bao buns, sashimi, gyoza and baklava. Fashion and food? Our kind of partners.  Opens 4th September

The Alchemist

With two venues in Manchester and one in Leeds, The Alchemist is finally coming to the capital when it opens later this month in Bevis Marks. They’ll be serving up coffee, brunch and dinner and their impressive cocktails. As the name suggests they’re 1 part scientists and 2 parts mixologists, expect cocktails in conical flasks, billowing smoke and showmanship. Sounds like our kind of science. Opens 10th September

Sometimes being a vegetarian in London just isn’t fun, you go to a restaurant you open the menu and oh what a surprise mushroom risotto or goats cheese tart…again. Well Ethos is taking the bull by the horns and serving up fast casual meat-free cuisine which is both delicious and nutritious. The self-service diner will be offering the likes of Hyderabadi Scotch eggs, Thai corn fritters, a Colomobian crema de Aguacata soup; and a Lebanese green bean and tomato salad, loubieh.  So far not a risotto in sight. Opens 22nd September 48 Eastlecastle Street London, W1W 8DX

Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings

Bourne and Hollingsworth, the team behind Reverend JW Simpson, Blitz Party and Prohibition are heading to Clerkenwell to open an all-day modern brasserie and bar with all the grandeur and faded elegance of a stately home. With trailing plants and sumptuous fabrics throughout you’ll find 5 spaces: The Bottle Room, a private dining which is lined with floor to ceiling cabinets housing bottles of boutique spirits, the cocktail bar where they will be mixing their signature cocktails, a café, green house and a 70-cover restaurant, where head chef Alec Visciano will be serving up his modern take on British brasserie food. We have a feeling this is going to be good! Opens 22nd September

Marcus Wareing is back with a new restaurant on Upper St Martins Lane, Tredwell’s.  With Andrew Ward heading up the kitchen the restaurant will be serving up British food with worldly influences so expect to find the likes of crayfish, gem, black rice and quinoa salad and salmon, spirulina, cauliflower and soy sauce. Split over three floors it will feature green leather banquettes and will be flooded in natural light from large windows and sky lights. Opens 25th September

Before you get the wrong idea, Swingers is a crazy golf club, not any other sort of club. Got it? Ok let us proceed, opening in a warehouse in Shoreditch it will feature a 9 hole crazy golf course, but the bit we are even more excited about? The 1920s clubhouse bar serving up cocktails and the terrace which will be serving up London’s finest street food, because you know crazy-golf can build up a sweat. They're starting off with burger legends Patty & Bun and pizza connoisseurs Pizza Pilgrims before the likes of Hix Fishdog’s, When Mac Met Cheese and Butchies, see us by the food! Opens  25th September

Having opened Sager and Wilde over in Hackney, Michael and Charlotte Sager-Wilde are back with their second venue, wine bar Mission. They’ll be setting up shop in Bethnal Green under the railway arches and will be focusing on Californian wines and American cocktails, food-wise expect to find Californian cooking with Italian inspiration. With a mezzanine, outside terrace and private dining room this sure is a heck of a wine bar. Opens September
