Shimmy London launches today on the site of the former cherryjam on Porchester Road. Brains behind the new night-spot are Hugo Heathcote and Deji Carr – respectively as Creative and Musical Directors. The duo, part of the team behind the hip LoveBrunch and E.T.A. parties, plan to take the venue back to its legendary ‘noughties’ musical roots.
The new club encourages playfulness and eccentricity, with an enchanted wardrobe staircase, Scrabble tiled bar and Magic Far Away Tree theme. Optical illusions and quirky Victorian trinkets are offset by stylish exposed brickwork and staff are smartly attired in Gatsby-eque, flapper or bow-tie looks.
The warm and inviting atmosphere is created using mercurised mirror, amber light filters and candles while an alcove with Victorian style interactive screens allows guests to create their own secret space. You’ll find vintage porn wallpaper and cheeky peep holes in the loos and there’s also a photo-booth (not, we suspect, in the loos) that’s linked with the venue’s social media channels.
Within the Shimmy ‘shop window’ different artworks will be showcased monthly via Shimmy’s artist initiative whereby young creative from across the capital will be encouraged to submit applications that match the Shimmy aesthetic with the chosen ones being invited to display their work on all the venue’s platforms – digital, within the building and in a window looking onto the street.
Eat Taiwanese steamed bun sliders and drink ‘healthly’ (we use this word advisedly) cocktails created by Hawksmoor’s Metinee (May) Kongsrivilai (ambassador of Bacardi UK) and dance your little socks off!
