Here’s one you may have missed from the final throes of last year. Enter Smith’s, bringing a welcome dose of glamour to W6r residents and Brook Green Hotel guests alike. Situated beneath the hotel, it’s all exposed brick walls and Louis XIV style furniture complete with velvet upholstery, tasselled lampshades and low lighting. Heavy silk curtains fall alongside chaise longues and distressed leather sofas, while exposed filament bulbs hang low over the bar.

Boasting one of the most extensive cocktail menus in the area, mixologist Jeevan Perinpanayagam serves up a flamboyant array of contemporary and classic concoctions – Dirty Martinis to Daiquiris, and Mai Tais to Manhattans and Mojitos – as well as fine wines and craft beers.

His Smith’s ‘Signature Secrets’ features girly creations such as the Sherbet Fountain (Stolichnaya vodka, fresh lemon juice and homemade sugar syrup shaken with egg white, topped with Angostura bitters and served with a liquorice straw) and Fruit Bubbles (passion fruit and lemon sorbet topped off with C&C Champagne and served with a mango lollipop). However, more masculine options include the Tall, Dark and Handsome (Young’s Double Chocolate stout, Havana Club 7 Year Old and Pedro Ximenez sherry served with Belgian chocolate pellets).

But no cocktail list is complete without a sharking pitcher and Smith’s version is the Gustav Holst. Created in homage to the composer who taught at the nearby school, it combines Bacardi Superior rum with Wray and Nephew Overproof rum, Sailor Jerry spiced rum, Angostura bitters, passion fruit purée, passion fruit syrup, guava juice, apple juice and fresh lemon juice. Hire one of five semi-circular booths or a curtained-off, raised ‘carriage’ section and indulge!

Sustenance comes in the form of sharing platters such as The Carnivore – piled high with pulled pork rillettes, chicken and chorizo skewers, rosemary and honey London bangers, crisp confit maple duck wings, ale chutney, tomato jam and cracker bread. Alternatively, a fish platter comes laden with smoked mackerel paté, crab and spring onion fish cakes, cured Scottish salmon gravadlax, calamari with lemon caper mayonnaise and smoked chipotle jam.
