The Handbook
The Handbook

Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling (Cahoots, Bunga Bunga, Bart’s, Mr Fogg’s Tavern et al) are back and this time they are joined by their wives marketeer, Anneke Gilkes and nutritional therapist, Zoe Stirling to bring an all-day fast, casual healthy eating South Kensington joint called Squirrel.

Known for fully embracing their themes (this is no half -hearted effort) Squirrel will feature a tree lined walkway, a twenty-one foot long fallen oak tree will make up the service counter, lights will be housed in hanging acorns, you’ll eat from acorn vessels and sit in timber clad tree-houses at large picnic style tables.

What will set Squirrel apart is that the food is accessible to everyone, it doesn’t matter if you can’t pronounce acai or don’t know your chia from your flax – because sometimes the health revolution can be a little daunting So you need some more energy? You’re a little lethargic? You need something to get you through your gym session? Let the staff know (who will all be trained in basic nutrition) and they can let you know what you should be eating from the menu which has been created by Zoe Stirling (Lomax/Akasha Wellbeing) and Creative Chef Consultant Dara Sutin (Jamie Oliver/Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop).

You’ll find four bespoke house salads including the like of Oh My Cob: chicken, egg, kale, quinoa, pickled red onion, avocado, sweetcorn, crutons and spicey cashew dressing and Kale Yeah: salmon, kale, fennel, cucumber, sweet potato, radish, almonds and citrus sumac dressing; four grain bowls, seasonal options made from foraged ingredients as well as soups and stews.

Open from 7am you can swing by on the way to work for breakfast or grab something for the commute, choose from poached egg breakfast pots, chunky avocado toast, porridge pots and organic yoghurt with numerous toppings. Want to grab some snacks to go? You’ll find them nuts, seeds, fruit and roasted beans hanging in bird feeders which you can decant and take away.

Ready for the drinks list? It’s extensive: matcha lattes, hot tonics, Allpress coffee will be served from the ‘Fallen Oak’ coffee station; water infusions and iced teas will be available from the re-fillable ‘Drinking Well’ and there’ll also be cold pressed juices, kombucha, fresh coconuts, turmeric lattes and reishi hot chocolate (don’t worry they’ll all have passed their nutritional guidelines so you know they’ll be good for you.)

They’ll be championing, seasonality, sustainability, recyclable and fully compostable packaging and making the most of the ‘ugly’ fruit and vegetable which doesn’t meet the supermarket’s crazy standards – well if we’re meant to embrace our own imperfections, let’s embrace theirs.

If you haven’t got it by now, they’re called Squirrel because they’re nuts about health.
