Next week will see the opening of Swift, an elegant cocktail bar but with all the friendliness of your local pub (hoping that your local is indeed friendly).

Setting up shop on Old Compton Street the team behind it are cocktail duo Bobby Hiddleston and Mia Johansson and the owners of Nightjar and Oriole, Roisin Stimpson and Edmund Weil. Split across two floors, it’s all about slick service and quick drinks.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by an airy standing bar inspired by the sweeping style of Joseff Hoffman and the Art Nouveau era. Upstairs the menu has a succinct list of aperitifs focussing on martinis, because if any drink signals the end of the day it’s the martini. Other drinks will include the Piccolina – a mix of white port, Amontillado sherry, fig and Angostura and the Sgroppini, a blend of Prosecco and lemon sorbet.  To accompany will be a selection of small plates such as native and rock oysters served with Nikkei sauce and shallot vinegar respectively and a Guinness Welsh rarebit. Head here before you go on to the theatre or supper or swing by for a nightcap on the way home.

If you have more time and no other plans, then head to the downstairs bar, which will have, live piano music, table service and a slower pace. Sink into one of the Art Deco sofas and order one of the drinks which lean more towards darker spirits or choose from a refined whisky library which will showcase affordable drams.

The only thing is, when has a quick drink after work, ever just been one swift drink?

Swift: Opens 5th December, 12 Old Compton Street, Soho, W1D 4TQ, www.barswift.com
