London’s first chiringuito is coming to Bethnal Green! ‘What’s a chiringuito?’ I hear you ask… It’s an all-day beachfront bar and restaurant serving tapas, snacks and refreshing drinks! ‘Wait, there’s no beachfront in Bethnal Green!’ I hear you scoff… and, well, good point.
Okay, so I’ve looked into that for you and when we said beachfront we meant ‘beach’ in the very broadest of terms, where public toilet and beach are synonymous (in Blackpool this would venn a little better). What it is is: East-Londoner, Alex Dehayen has bought some old public bogs and decided to make a trendy bar out of them, and we’re actually going mad for it. The derelict bloc will be brought to life in a real passion project that typifies East London and has been transformed from a grimy loo block into a contemporary all-day bar. Oh, and the chiringuito you were asking about? That’s going to be on top, overlooking the Museum Gardens. And to hammer home the message, it’s going to be called Chiringuito!
Dehayen has also brought in Peruvian Head Chef, Marco Padilla, to create a menu that brings to life the chiringuito spirit, with fresh Hispanic and Latin American flavours. And while sharing and public toilets are normally bad combos, at the chiringuito you’ll be encouraged to share, true to the spirit of tapas and pinchos. Forget Bethnal Green, this is going to legit feel like Barcelona, with tapas aplenty including classic dishes like padron peppers, patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo while Mexico and South America, will add in signatures like Seabass ceviche in Peruvian leche del tigre.
Although it already sounds like quite a party, don’t worry about the booze, expect a long list of Cavas and Spanish wines, a spread of Spanish gins (their speciality will be gin and tonics) and Latino twists on classic cocktails, like bloody Maria, with a kick of tequila or mezcal. For the beer drinkers, fear not, craft beers from local east London breweries will be represented!
So rather than heading for the beach, head to Chiringuito this summer.
Chiringuito opens at Museum Gardens, Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green, E2 9PA
