This August will see the opening of The Good Egg in Stoke Newington, bringing a taste of Tel Aviv, California and Montreal to East London.
Friends: Joel Braham, Oded Mizrachi, Alex Coppard and Myles Broscoe have spent two years cooking in market stalls and at street feasts from KERB to street feast and now they’re opening a permanent site in a Grade II listed building on Stoke Newington Church Street.
The menu is inspired by their childhoods and travels, luckily for us they had a more interesting dishes as youngsters than we did, a menu of mash potatoes and baked beans wouldn’t be that interesting. So you’ll find bagels that remind Myles of growing up in the Mile End district of Montreal, Oded is bringing stuffed pitas that he grew up on in Tel Aviv and Joel will be serving up street side crispy fried chicken, Californian style.
The team will source the best ingredients with wines coming from Church Street locals, Borough Wines, London craft beers and smoked salmon coming from Hansen and Lydersen. They’ll be smoking their own fish and meat, baking their own bread and bagels and we’ve heard that the signature dish The Good Egg Burger is one not to be missed, an aged beef and bone marrow patty topped with pickled onion, Russian dressing and a runny egg in their distinctive little plaited challah rolls.
Come the weekend guests can indulge in all-day brunch feasts, they’ll be serving up what they call a ‘Jerusalem Breakfast’ which gives a nod to the smorgasbord of little sharing plates found in the city. They’ll be cocktails, fresh juices, bagels with smoked black cod and salmon, challah French toast and date syrup alongside other weekly specials.
Herbs will be grown in the garden, where you’ll be able to sit and make the most of the sunny evenings, glass of wine in hand, listening to a soundtrack of the team’s collection of vinyl. They’ll also be running a schools breakfast community programme with charity, Magic Breakfast, and visiting schools in east London to cook breakfasts, host demonstrations and run workshops – they really are good eggs.
