Following on from the announcement that there will be a second Bluebird at the end of this year, restaurant super group, D&D London are about to open their next restaurant, Aster.
Opening in Victoria’s Nova quarter, Aster, which has been designed by Russell Sage Studios will be made up of a café and deli on the ground floor and upstairs a restaurant and bar. And the food? It’s the work of Executive Chef, Helena Puolakka (Skylon, Cirrus Inns’ Epicurean Collection, Company of Cooks, La Tante Claire and Hotel Balzac) who looks to both her Finnish heritage and her French culinary training for inspiration – it’s continuing London’s dalliance with Nordic dining which looks set to become even more popular this year.
What this means is that the menu combines the uncomplicated, distinctive flavours of Scandinavia, with the vibrant produce and intrinsic love of food found in France. Dishes include meatballs a la Lindstrom with beef and beetroot; juniper-smoked turbot with tender leeks and butter sauce; sea bass ‘in paper’ with fennel, olives, tomatoes; fish roes and blinis, naturally matched with vodka and aquavit. For pudding you’ll find the likes of lingonberry almonds and pines; cloudberry, rye and salted liquorice and a dish of chocolate and beetroots.
Downstairs in the deli you can pick up fish roe, pickled herring and wild berries, so you can get your hygge on at home. In the café you can gorge on cinnamon buns and house cured Var salmon open sandwiches, Nordic classics such as wild reindeer sausages, caramelised onions and lingonberries and different smorgasbords. There’ll be traditional English breakfasts, but we say branch away and try The Nordic offering of sherry herrings, smoked vendance, cured salmon, pickled cucumber, crispy rye and egg butter instead.
2017, it’s going to be a big year for Victoria, the opening of Nova means the arrival of The Riding House Café, Timmy Green, Jason Atherton’s new joint and Franco Manca amongst others; it’s also going to be a big year for D & D.
To celebrate the opening they are offering 50% off lunch and dinner on the 31st January. To book simply call 020 3875 5555 with the code ‘HANDBOOK50’ to claim the offer.
