El Pastor, the Mexican taqueria serving freshly made tacos from their Borough Market base, is about to gain a hombre. Welcome Tortilleria El Pastor, which will materialise in late March on nearby Druid Street.
The trio behind El Pastor, Sam and James Hart alongside Crispin Somerville, has already got a hit on their hands with El Pastor, the Stoney Street restaurant, so it’s natural that they should branch out, and Tortilleria El Pastor is the perfect next step.
The tortilleria, or taco factory, will churn out fresh tortillas, made from scratch every day, using Mexican heirloom corn (maize) and available to take away. Toppings will include El Pastor salsas, fresh tomatillos, serranos, jalapenos and other fresh chillies, plus Mexican style cheeses from Gringa Dairy, tortilla presses, mezcal, Mexican beers; in fact everything you’d need to prepare Mexican food at home.
If you want to eat in, then the taco bar will serve warm, freshly made, tortillas topped with 24 hour marinated pork shoulder, caramelised pineapple and guacamole taquero or their Mushroom taco, which comes with caramelised onion and melted Oaxaca cheese.
And it’s not just tacos, Tortilleria El Pastor will be offering Sopes, thick corn mini maize cakes piled high with toppings. Or pudding, in the form of Mezcal, burnt honey and grapefruit cake; chocolate pots; and the El Pastor Bounty Bar. And finally, all this can be washed down with liberal amounts of Mexican beer or El Pastor’s first batch of its own mezcal, made in partnership with Mexico’s La Clandestina mezcaleria.
The tortilleria will seat 26 and the design, by James Hart, is utilitarian, evoking the Stoney Street restaurant with festoon lighting and a pared back aesthetic.
Tortilleria El Pastor: Opens in late March and will be located at 106 Druid Street, London Bridge, SE1 2HH www.tacoselpastor.co.uk
