Chor Bizarre in Mayfair is an exquisitely decorated Indian restaurant which has based its interior around its name meaning ‘thieves market’ with a mix of beautifully decorated chairs, tables and ornaments filling the dining area. The menus aren’t left out either as they are covered with detailed drawings of the markets with introductions to the dishes before listing the food.
The starter of Aloo tikki chaat were nice potato patties filled with spiced lentil and green peas, served warm, topped with yoghurt, tamarind and mint chutney. They were pleasant but lacked the proper Indian spices to separate it from a hash brown imitation. The Vegetable samosa chaat were two upright samosas decorated with channa masala, yoghurt and chutneys. The mixture of mild spice from the samosas, creamy yoghurt and sweet masala was a perfect blend on the palate.
For main the classic Chicken tikka had a creamy sauce, which luckily lacked the sharpness that some tikkas are ruined by, generously poured over tender chunks of chicken. The Saag paneer had perfect creamy spinach with the moist cheese being easily pulled apart by my fork. The Dal chor bizarre which consisted of thick black lentils flavoured with tomatoes and cream had been simmered overnight on the tandoor to really infuse the flavours.
The real winner for me were the puddings, humorously written on a menu in the shape of a spinning axe. We opted for the Gulab jamun; spheres made of thickened milk, fried and infused with sweet rose flavoured syrup, which are also known as Indian doughnuts. They were moist balls of chewy, sweet dough covered in a thin syrup that had the perfect about of sweetness so as to tantalise the taste buds but not clog your mouth with stickiness. The Cardamom and Pistachio ice creams were pleasant accompaniments.
