Luxury hotel, InterContinental London Westminster, has combined two English pleasures, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and afternoon tea to create an ‘Edible Garden’ themed Afternoon Tea. Laurent-Perrier is also getting in on the action as guests can enjoy free-flowing champagne as they relax in the comfortable and glamorous surroundings of the InterContinental.
The tea begins with savoury options including an avocado whipped mini-shot, tricky to get out of the glass but worth the effort, and a goat’s cheese and tomato canape with cheddar shortbread that melts in your mouth.
Everything on the menu maintains the RHS Chelsea Flower Show including the floral teas like the Flowering Osmanthus which has notes of apricot and mango, and the Floral Cocktails like Best in Show Gin with yellow Chartreuse, lychee juice, aloe vera, elderflower cordial and Violette liqueur garnished with edible flowers and mint.
The next course is a freshly baked mini Chelsea bun and a lavender infused scone served with Devonshire clotted cream, home-made strawberry rose jam and lemon curd. The lemon curd is so fresh and zesty, I recommend eating it with the Chelsea bun and then eating it off the spoon, it is that good!
The final course is the most visually impressive and where the floral theme is most abundant. The ‘Edible Garden’ is served on slate with a conservatory glass triangle protecting it. It is removed to unveil a garden with edible soil, (very realistic looking) chocolate pebbles and a host of plants like the Lemon box hedge, Manjari chocolate pond (with a liquid chocolate centre featuring a lily pad) and Orange blossom flowerpots.
Although eating the Afternoon Tea was the most enjoyable part of the tea, it was almost as enjoyable to admire the effort gone into creating each item. The savoury options looking like mini creations from a garden allotment and the final course was a masterpiece of floral creativity.
The Edible Garden Afternoon Tea runs until the 26th May with servings at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm.
