Floridita Hot Rum Bar Review

Last week, Floridita launched a Hot Rum Bar for the Christmas season, which will be open until early February. It is located in their subterranean Rum Shack, with a perfect view of the long bar so you can watch your hot cocktails being prepared – always my favourite part!

We were shown to a sofa, where we could just sit back and relax: all of the sofas are covered in comfy throws and cushions, so it is the perfect place to snuggle up and catch up with friends over Christmas. As well as the usual Rum Shack menu, there is also a Hot Rum Bar menu, featuring seven specially-crafted winter warmer cocktails.

For our first round, we went for ‘Hot Spiced Tai’ which is a variety of rums, mixed with hot water, citrus, cointreau, almond syrup, and cloves syrup, and ‘Lazy Winter’ which is Mathuzalem, dark chocolate liquor, Tia Maria, egg, sugar, milk, and double cream. Not the healthiest of cocktails, but pretty yummy – it tasted like an alcoholic chocolate milkshake, and was even served in a tall glass with a straw. The only thing I thought as a little odd was that it was cold: I thought it was a hot rum bar? But the Hot Spiced Tai was much more Christmassy: a bit like a more citrusy version of mulled wine, it was warm and comforting and left me feeling very cheery and festive. Definitely my favourite!

For round two, we opted for Barbados Toddy, a blend of rum, hot tea, honey, cloves, cinnamon and lemon juice. The best way I can describe this is Lemsip, but nice: it had the same hot lemon base, but with lots of spicy notes – it really hit the spot on a cold winter’s evening. Last up was the Cocorummy flip. I did originally choose the Smoky Chocolate but unfortunately they had run out of some of the ingredients. Anyway, back to the Cocorummy; again, it was cold (odd given the idea behind the bar!) but it was delicious. A mixture of rum, coconut rum, egg yolk and sugar syrup, it would have been much more at home on a Caribbean beach, but the flavour was there and I would quite like to see it added to the normal Rum Shack menu. It would be perfect for a hot summer’s day.

All in all, the Hot Rum Bar is definitely worth a visit. Floridita has a wonderful, unique atmosphere, and if you time it right, you can sit back and enjoy some live Cuban music like we did. It is firmly on the pricey end of the cocktail spectrum, but if you fancy an alternative to mulled wine and hot cider this winter, then we’d definitely recommend giving the Hot Rum Bar a go!
