What: The hotel has reinvented its much-loved HeART Afternoon Tea which we reviewed here to offer an exclusive Valentine’s edition.
New? The HeART Afternoon Tea has been created just in time for the most loved up day of the year and will be available from 8-14th February 2017.
Where? Lancaster London, Lancaster Terrace, W2 2TY www.lancasterlondon.com
On the Menu: The afternoon tea has an array of sweet and savoury treats including oysters (for obvious reasons) with salmon caviar, heart-shaped white chocolate and strawberry macaroons, and ‘Love You’ honey éclairs. To sweeten the deal, the hotel will also be offering a surprise gift for diners to take home.
First Impressions: The Lounge has a selection of armchairs and sofas perfect to enjoy a romantic afternoon so I made a bee-line to our area where the table was already neatly laid for us. Our waiter was excellent, friendly and professional, constantly on hand to answer my never-ending request for more clotted cream.
The Look: Lancaster London is currently undergoing a £75 million refurbishment to give it a more modern look which will be completed in August 2017 but the makeover has yet to make it to the Lounge room where teas is served. The Lounge walls are adorned with distinctive scenic paintings by modernist Irish artist Norman Teeling.
What We Ate: You can reorder your favourites from the savoury section so we doubled up on the choux bun filled with a tomato and basil filling which was everything we’d hoped for, the British 28-day hung beef sandwich, and the creamy egg and cress sandwich. Giving a throwback to the original Art Tea normally served at the hotel, the jam and clotted cream is served in paint tubes that you squirt onto your scones of which you get a freshly baked plain, raisin and chocolate version.
Over to cakes; the passion fruit tart tastes exactly like a bite of Solero ice cream, the pink Champagne lollipops have a fantastic soft gel inside once you’ve cracked the chocolate and the the white chocolate and strawberry macaroons are a sweet-toothed person’s dream. The raspberry and ‘Love You’ honey éclair is made with honey from the hotel’s own bee hives which they farm on their roof – a nice touch.
What We Drank: We got the afternoon off to a good start with a glass of Pommery Champagne but you can also go for a Sipsmith gin and tonic. To ensure the perfect cup of tea, you are given coloured sand timers that correspond with different varieties, so you know exactly how long to brew your tea for.
Go With: Given the theme, it’s only fitting that you take your deserving other half but if you’re slightly lacking in that department then break the mould and go with a friend or even your mum.
Final Word: Lancaster London has a history of producing top quality afternoon teas and the latest offering would have Cupid himself giving the nod of approval. It’s an ideal date spot to take your beau for an afternoon of snacking miniature food while cosied up on the sofa sipping Champagne.
