What: Kin is a vegetarian and vegan café in Fitzrovia serving a 100% vegetarian menu that includes a lot of vegan, gluten free and raw options.

New? Kin was founded in 2014 by father and son Peter and Charlie Meadows (hence the name).

Where? 22 Foley St, Fitzrovia, W1W 6DT www.kincafe.co.uk

On the menu: The menu changes daily, using local, seasonal ingredients with a focus on nutritious food. The menu seems mostly for take away with lots of breakfast, brunch and light lunch options. Dishes include banana and almond chia pudding and egg and avocado on toast with hemp seeds and chili flakes plus a selection of salads, sandwiches, soups, frittatas and vegan quiches.

First Impressions: It’s a warm day when we go and people are making use of the street dining by sitting outside. Inside it is empty except one table although seating is limited anyway, we go for the best seat at the back where you can have a little bit of privacy away from the counter where food is on display.

The Look: The clean eating philosopher is reflected in the interior of Kin, it’s bright and airy with white washed walls, clean lines and a palette of stone and slate greys. In one corner is a living wall of ferns and plants and seating is made up of individual high tables and banquettes, but the main focus is the counter, which is piled high with salads and sandwiches.

What We Ate: Nothing that was on display on the counter looked particularly appetising so I tried my luck with the menu options deciding on the potato frittata with the extras of an egg and avocado. It was really average looking on arrival and no strong flavour really came through except the side of dill cream which had horseradish in that wasn’t advertised. On the sweeter side the pancakes with fruit and cream were distinctly unimpressive and your attempts at home on pancake day would probably be better. The only delectable thing on the menu were the Portuguese custards tarts with raspberry which were really delicious.

What We Drank: Kin has a selection of juices available of which we chose the tropical and the refresher options, they would have been perfect, had it not been for the fact that they were served lukewarm, a couple of ice cubes wouldn’t have gone a miss.

Go With: As this is a vegetarian and vegan cafe take someone whose diet is that way inclined but perhaps someone without high expectations.

Final Word: It’s a shame that Kin has missed the mark as it claims to be the only one of its kind in Fitzrovia which must be somewhat of a disappointment to the local residents who have an interest in clean eating – there are also better options like Detox Kitchen which is a three minute walk away.
