The newly refurbished gastro pub situated in South London’s popular suburb, Balham, has also just re-launched their menu. As a resident of Balham and within walking distance of the pub, it was hard to resist the opportunity to go and taste their new Eastern American/British influenced menu.
The revamp has done wonders and immediately walking into the restaurant there was a cosy and intimate atmosphere in a quirky and light space. To start, I had mussels with smoked bacon and pale ale. Sophie had the smoked rainbow trout and roasted chilli fish cakes. The tastes from the juices were delicious and the smokiness from the bacon was distinct without overpowering the rest of the flavours. The mussels were flaunted in the aromas which luckily let you forget what they look like for a couple of minutes. Again the fishcakes were delicious and a splatter of mayo complimented them perfectly.
As our mains arrived, I could see the colours of mine from the kitchen door. The bright pinks and purples of my slow roasted chicken, thyme butter, violet potato salad, root veg slaw, fries were imaginative and amazing to look at. Not only that, but tasted delicious.
The Grove is perfect for young families, getting together with friends or joining the guys to watch a game of footy at the bar. A cool and relaxed vibe with friendly and welcoming service– I will definitely be returning.
