Cinnamon scones, brandy butter, champagne and a Viking vodka pop-up can all be found at Skylounge this Christmas. Situated on the 12th floor of the Double Tree Hotel in Tower Hill, the lounge offers something for everyone and if you are looking for a Christmassy tea or a festive drink then definitely worth a visit.

After checking out the views of London that can be seen from the terrace and taking the obligatory pictures, we decided that we would try the Christmas afternoon tea that was on offer. If you have eaten enough mince pies to feed Rudoloph this year, then this is certainly the place for your, with no mince pies in sight. However, being a bit of a mince pie lover, I must say that I missed this from the tea menu and felt as though it would have made a rather sweet addition.

Our tea was the envy of all of the customers with several people asking us what we had ordered when they saw the beautiful display that was on offer. With chocolate mousse filled baubles and cake pops in the mix…who wouldn’t be jealous. And after a glass of champagne, followed by some English breakfast tea we were ready to begin. Putting a twist on a traditional tea, the cinnamon scones were extremely moreish, and when combined with the brandy butter made for a great treat. If like us you can be found by the cheese on Christmas day, make sure to try the mini brie and cranberry sandwiches which seemed to go down very well amongst my group.

Like Christmas Day itself, this is not a light menu, and after devouring through the scones and sandwiches, I definitely had to loosen my belt before taking on the sweet selection. The cake pops, despite being aesthetically pleasing, were not quite as delicious as I hoped but this did not stop me from consuming both. And whilst the Christmas baubles were a good idea, I think they could have been a little smaller with the white chocolate and coconut option becoming a little sickly after a while. Despite this the tea was lovely with just the right amount of Christmas cheer to get the festive season started.

Before heading home, we decided to try out the Vahalla Viking Bar, a pop-up situated on the terrace. Based in a wintry Viking cabin, we embraced our inner Thor’s and sampled the Viking named cocktails on offer. These were vodka based and I would definitely recommend trying out Hrafnass (yes we had trouble pronouncing it too) which was a lovely blend of lavender and blueberry syrup mixed with apple juice, soda and of course snow queen vodka! It wasn’t long until we had got into the Viking spirit and we are looking forward to going back soon!

The Christmas afternoon tea will be available until end of December, whilst Vahalla will be open to enjoy until February 2015.
