The ESPA life spa at the Corinthia covers four floors, that’s four floors of pure escapism and luxury. It features 17 treatment rooms, a nail studio, Daniel Galvin hair salon, a state of the art gym, a private spa suite and the thermal floor which is where we were headed.
As we walked into the spa, down through the serene and white corridor, we could immediately feel our permanent state of tension that Londoners seem to have, release. First of all we headed to the gym to get in a workout before the spa. If you want to talk about state of the art then this is it, decked out in black and grey, it was a gym made for #healthinspo Instagram posts. There were Xdream bike simulators, TRX machines, Powerplates alongside treadmills, cross trainers and weights. There were headphones if you’d forgotten your own, as well as complimentary bottled water, lemon water, bananas and protein balls – all in all our kind of gym.
After half an hour, we felt we had done enough to warrant spending the next two hours in the spa… well it’s better than nothing and all that. The thermal floor is both dramatic and seductive: sheer black walls, stainless steel , flickering fires, white marble all with that heady , woody ESPA fragrance. And unusually there were more men than women when we visited, proving that spas don’t have to be overly feminine.
Start in the black tiled steam room, which comes with showers inside for when things get too hot, before moving onto the vitality pool. Oh that pool, with its jet streams and fountains, we could have spent all day there, it pummelled and buffed our skin, massaged out the knots and left us feeling like we could just float away. And float away we did, in the Onyx pool, looking up at the ripples on the ceiling, our skin feeling silky soft. After another shower (we couldn’t get enough of the ESPA products) we headed into the amphitheatre style sauna, it features glass walls which somehow don’t get all steamed up like the windows usually do. As we both lay there we proclaimed that this has to be up there as one of the best spas in London.
We finished by dozing on the heated marble recliners watching the mesmerising fires and wishing we didn’t have to leave and go back into the chaos. The changing rooms were immaculate, with ESPA products in all the showers, perfectly lit mirrors and the fluffiest towels, we had serious envy, if only our bathrooms were like that at home.
Even if you don’t make it for a night at the Corinthia, you need to visit the spa, think of it as restoring your health, a body M.O.T which really is just a necessity.
