After an exhausting weekend of battling the crowds in an attempt to get some Christmas shopping done, we nipped over to the newly opened Wildflower Café in Notting Hill for some Sunday afternoon tea and cake – as you do.
We collapsed into some chairs in the shabby-chic café and were swiftly brought a comforting cup of tea and hot buttered toast with strawberry jam. Feeling revived and ready to devour some homemade cake, we opted for the chocolate fudge and pear and carrot and walnut varieties, and we were not disappointed: the slices were huge and frankly just what the doctor ordered on a wintery afternoon. The chocolate cake was dark and a little bit spicy or ‘Christmassy’ as my brother put it, while the carrot cake was soft and indulgent with crunchy walnut pieces. Thoroughly enjoyable.
While we were there, we were shown the lunch and dinner menus and were pleasantly surprised by how complex they were. Featuring dishes such as smoked salmon pate, guinea fowl curry and pan-roasted cod loin, this little café looks like it might turn into quite the restaurant come dinner-time. We can’t wait to go back and sample some of the dinner dishes, but for now, we’re quite happy to recommend popping down to Notting Hill for a slice of hearty homemade cake.
