It might not be the first thing you think of when you think of things that should be adapted into a film- but Barbie’s new big screen adaptation is moving full steam ahead. While for years it seemed like the film would remain an unmade myth, the first official image of Margot Robbie as Barbie was released by Warner Bros a few days ago.
The film, set to release some time next year, will directed by the acclaimed Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Ladybird), and it’s gone through several iterations, with prospective Barbies including Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway, before landing on the Robbie-Gerwig team.
Barbie will be joined by her longtime male counterpart Ken, played by Ryan Gosling. Other big names attached to the new movie include Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman and Will Ferrell.
There isn’t a huge amount known about the films plot, or even what a Barbie film would entail, but given some of the names behind it and some of the buzz surrounding the film, it seems like its unlikely to be standard dolls and dress up fare, and more of a self aware meta commentary on Barbie dolls and the role they’ve played in society. It’s certainly an odd idea, but then Barbie and Ken have appeared in Toy Story, and there’s films based on Lego and Bratz- so why not one about the world’s most famous doll?
Oh, and before you ask, sadly the famous novelty one hit wonder Barbie Girl apparently won’t be in the film-but perhaps Aqua’s tune will be saved for the trailer? Regardless, a Greta Gerwig film about Barbie has us intrigued, which is enough of a novelty in itself.
