Cocktails are one of my favourite things. You never quite know what goes into them, but as if by magic they’re exactly the right sweetness and delightfully drinkable. Sometimes too drinkable. In fact, sometimes it’s like drinking Ribena with rum hidden in it. Have you ever tried making them at home? It’s always a disaster. An evening ends up with about eight half squeezed limes lying around the table next to bowls of melting ice. But no more!

Now that London’s bars have opened up, so too have the cocktail masterclasses. Sign up yourself, your partner, your friends, your family (whoever you can convince basically) to one of these cocktail classes for an experience to remember. Expect fire, smoke and a little bit of magic… good luck recreating that at home!

Purl

It’s time to go underground and enjoy a golden era of cocktails. Purl is a 1920s speakeasy in the heart of Marylebone, serving up theatrical and experimental cocktails. The name comes from a 19th century drink that was commonly sold on the streets of London and sets the scene of unusual drinks perfectly.

From dry ice to cocktails in a bag, expert mixologists will teach you all the techniques used to mix up some of the most luscious libations. Using food, smoke and foam, you’ll learn how each of the ingredients stimulate a different sense: taste, touch, smell, sight and sound as well as the history behind each element.

Then relax and sip your tipples amongst baroque interiors and a broody atmosphere.
