Pleasure and Provenance Fabulous chocolates since 1983. Incarcerated in a convent school she hated filled with terrible, cold school dinners, Chantal Coady discovered that chocolate makes the world a little better. In a cheerless place it provided her with a warm sprinkling of magic, and upon gaining her freedom she went on a mission to find good chocolate. She thought everyone dreamed of owning a chocolate shop, and refused to be talked out of her crazy idea of opening a place where people could indulge their wildest chocolate dreams.

In March 1983, after a 10-week small business course, she opened the first Rococo Chocolates at 321 Kings Road in London. The original shop looked like a Rococo-themed stage set, complete with sugar chandelier and candy-floss pink walls that matched Chantal’s hair and eighteenth-century-meets-punk style. Its imagination and sense of fun intoxicated chocolate-lovers who, bored with stuffy department-store confectionery departments, came on pilgrimages from miles away.

One of our early customers was Joanne Harris, and it has been said that Chantal was an inspiration for her book ‘Chocolat’! Today we have a new flagship store at 5 Motcomb Street in Belgravia full of hidden treasures including the MaRococo secret garden, a courtyard oasis for sitting with a tea, coffee or rich hot chocolate from our cafe, and maybe a truffle or two fresh from the kitchen. A glass window in the shop floor lets you spy on the kitchen below as they make delicate chocolates and dream up new flavours.

This kitchen is where we hold chocolate school (now there’s a class you won’t want to bunk off), host bespoke parties and even arrange marriage proposals. Chantal’s hair is no longer pink – or punk – but the Chelsea shop still stands on the exact spot where everything started all those years ago and is now an intrinsic part of the Kings Road’s story. Our third shop at 45 Marylebone High Street, close to lovely Regents Park, is a calm haven full of treats to ease a shopper’s weary heart.
