Big bows are having a moment right now, from velvety styles tied in the hair to fabulous ’80’s inspired cocktail dresses and shoes covered in the pretty detail. Scroll on for 28 of our favourite pieces…

Bows have been a favourite of feminine style for as long as we can remember, but this season they are back and we are loving the romantic mood they set amidst the tougher trends like puffers and chunky boots. Brands like Saloni are leading the way, adding them to rich velvet dresses that are perfect for the party season – check out Pandora Sykes below who’s a fan of the brand. For a more modest budget but something that still feels unique and special, Brit brand Sister Jane are all about the bows right now. Check out their cute babydoll-esque Pisces Velvet Smock – great paired with polka dot tights and platforms – or their bridal range which can easily double up as party wear.

Whilst the Sister Jane aesthetic is quite cutesy, bows can be sexy and elegant too. Case in point: Self-Portraits off-shoulder, soft Crepe Mini Dress; or for an investment piece that will stand the test of time, the Jimmy Choo Aveline 100 Bow-Embellished Sandals, which feature an OTT grosgrain bow at the heel, are divine.

Although bows are usually thought of as an evening wear detail, they translate well into a more casual wardrobe too. Check out Boden’s sweet Breton with rich velvety bow or River Island’s tougher Black Denim Bow Detail Shirt – pair either with high-waist denim and chunky loafers for a cooler edge.

If your style errs more on the side of subtle, you can’t go wrong with a plump velvety bow tied in the hair. Henriette Von Grunberg’s dreamy hair accessories make great Christmas gifts, while ASOS provides a whole host of cute styles all for under £10.

Take style cues from writer and broadcaster Pandora Sykes who chose one of this season’s standout dresses for her recent book event – Saloni’s rich velvet Camille dress. While Instagram favourite, Hannah Stafford Taylor is a big fan of the supersized hair bow. We love the way she keeps it polished and understated with a low pony and a classic Chanel brooch.

Big bows can look a little sickly sweet so toughen them up with something like vinyl trousers or chunky boot.
