Period drama lovers, this will be music to your ears. A new historical drama is about to drop, and it comes directly from the creator of Downton Abbey…
Last month saw American cable television company, HBO announce that a new drama series is set to debut in January, bringing with it an official teaser trailer and first look images. The series in name? The Gilded Age, a new series from Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey.
With Downton fans already on the edge of their seats at the news, The Gilded Age certainly has a lot to live up to, and just from watching the 50 second teaser trailer, we think it’s likely it’ll do just that. Whether you’re a Downton Abbey fan or you’re longing for a new period drama to arrive on your screen, here’s everything you need to know about The Gilded Age.
What’s it about?
The nine-part series is set in the American Gilded Age, a period of great change. It saw a mammoth economic growth, conflict between the old ways and new systems, and great fortunes made and ultimately, lost.
The Gilded Age follows Marian Brook (Jacobson), a young woman as she transitions from rural Pennsylvania to New York City in 1882 following the death of her father. She moves away to live with her two aunts, Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski) and Ada Brook (Nixon), both of whom come from great, old money.
The series will follow Marian, and her blossoming friendship with Peggy Scott (Benton), an aspiring writer seeking a fresh start. We follow Marian as she becomes caught up in a social war between one of her aunts, a scion of the old money set, and her ridiculously rich neighbours, George (Spector) and Bertha Russell (Coon).
Set on the brink of tremendous change and movement towards a more modern age, how will Marian fare? Will she follow the set out rules or surge towards her own future?

Who’s starring in it?
Prepare for a plethora of big names. Taking on the starring role of Marian is Lousia Jacobson, while her old money aunts Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook will be performed by The Good Fight’s Christine Baranski and Sex and the City star, Cynthia Nixon.
There’ll also be other notable characters, including roles from the likes of Denee Benton, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, Simon Jones, Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Harry Richardson.

Who’s behind it?
Julian Fellowes is leading The Gilded Age as creator, writer and executive producer. He’s the mind behind a wealth of hugely popular projects, including Downton Abbey and Belgravia. So it’s worth watching this new hit before Downton Abbey: A New Era, the sequel film finally hits cinemas in Spring 2022.
Working alongside him are various executive producers including Gareth Neame, Michael Engler (also directing), David Crockett, Salli Richardson-Whitefield (also directing), and writer and co-executive producer, Sonja Warfield.
When can we watch it?
The Gilded Age is set to premiere on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on Tuesday 25th January! So there really isn’t long to wait at all to find out more about Marian Brook’s adventures in NYC.
