Keen on psychological thrillers? Apple TV+ is bringing a new series to their platform on 29th July, and it’s got a seriously intriguing plot. It stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as an amnesiac trying to put her memories back together after suffering a traumatic head injury- that apparently came about from a suicide attempt.

The show’s synopsis sums up the show with “Through twists and turns and an unexpected love triangle, this sexy, elevated thriller asks: What if you woke up one day and didn’t know your own secrets?”

Mbatha-Raw, known for her roles in Black Mirror, The Morning Show and Loki, stars as Sophie, the woman at the centre of Surface. Sophie suddenly finds herself realising that she’s lost her memories, and is told that this occurred following an attempt to take her own life. While she tries to piece things back together again, she begins to question whether she’s been told everything she doesn’t remember truthfully. “If my life was so perfect, why did I try to end it?” she asks in the show’s trailer.

As Sophie starts to get frustrated and suspect that she’s been told a distorted truth about what happened to her and sets out on her own to find answers, she gets pointers from people she meets. She finds that she may not have thrown herself off the boat deliberately, and that her husband may not be who he says he is. Starring alongside Mbatha-Raw includes Oliver Jackson-Cohen as her husband James, Stephan James as Baden, Marriane Jean-Baptiste as Hannah, Francois Arnaud as Harrison and Millie Brady as Eliza.

While psychological thrillers about amnesiacs aren’t exactly rare, Surface does have an impressive calibre of talent behind the camera as well as in front, which promises that it’ll be an interesting, original take on the concept. It’s creator, Veronica West, was also behind the Zoe Kravitz starring High Fidelity in 2020, while several episodes in the series (including the pilot) are directed by Sam Miller, who directed Michaela Cole’s I May Destroy You. The show is also being produced by Hello Sunshine, the company founded by Reese Witherspoon which produced Big Little Lies and the recent film Where the Crawdads Sing.

Surface is set to debut on 29th July, and will run for 8 episodes, with the first three being available immediately on the premiere date. You can watch the series trailer above.
