Netflix is no stranger to shows about kids investigating the paranormal, with their hit show Stranger Things being of the biggest on the planet- but their new series The Midnight Club takes that concept and gives it something of a twist.
Created by Mike Flanagan who was also behind The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, the show focuses on a group of terminally ill teenagers and the odd things that start happening to them.
Brightcliffe Home is a hospice that has a mysterious history, run by a strange and enigmatic doctor (played by Heather Langenkamp). Every night, eight of the terminally ill teens residing there meet up as The Midnight Club, to tell each other scary stories and look out for the supernatural. They decide eventually to meet up and make a pact that whoever of them dies first must try and communicate with the others from beyond the grave. During the show, one of them does die- and strange and sinister things begin happening to the rest.
The Netflix show is an adaptation of a 1994 novel of the same name, written by Christopher Pike, and it’ll run for ten episodes in its initial season. While there’s the central story of the Midnight Club kids, the show also depicts the sinister stories that they tell, adding to the thrills and horror fun. Appearing in the cast are Iman Benson, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Annarah Cymone, William Chris Sumpter, Adia, Aya Furukawa and Sauriyan Sapkota, as well as horror film legend Heather Langenkamp, who played Nancy in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The official trailer for the show gives the first glimpse into the show, with the main character (played by Iman Benson) being told that she has terminal cancer and will end up getting treatment at a hospice. There, she meets the members of the Midnight Club, and they decide to let her into the group. There are plenty of ghosts and apparitions in the trailer, as she tries to find if there’s actually a way to save them from death – though it may put them in danger. Looking for something a little lighter to watch? News of the latest season of Emily in Paris has been released, while hotly anticipated drama The Good Nurse comes to Netflix later this month.
The Midnight Club is set to arrive on Netflix well in time for Halloween on 7th October, with all episodes releasing at once.
