Two of the biggest names in acting right now are coming together for a brand new series on Disney+: Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones will be starring in this true crime drama miniseries that was adapted from a book of the same name. Both Garfield and Edgar-Jones have been busy with how much they’re putting out in the last few months, and we have a feeling Under The Banner of Heaven could be a fantastic crime series.

The storyline fouces on a detective, played by Garfield, who is heavily tested in his faiths when he has to investigate a murder mystery, one that seems to connected to a Utah family who becomes hugely commited to Church of the Latter Day Saints fundamentalism. It’s based on a 2003 novel by Jon Krakauer, that explores the Latter Saints church and the murder supposedly committed in the name of God during the 1980s.

Garfield seems to have a knack for playing heavily religious characters, with this role following his acclaimed turns in Hacksaw Ridge, Silence and The Eyes of Tammy Faye, so you can expect another great performance from him. Edgar-Jones meanwhile portrays the victim of one of the murders (mild spoilers!), a mother named Brenda Wright Lafferty. The show seems to promise to delve into Brenda’s life and backstory, while Detective Pyre investigates her and the community of the town she was murdered in.

An official trailer for the series was released recently, offering a glimpse at the creepy and disturbing murder case, and Pyre’s unsettled suspicions of the forces that caused it. The plot looks to be a classic tale of a small town that looks idlylicc on the outside, but harbours dark secrets, with the plot synopsis released reading: “A devout detective’s faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS (Latter Day Saints) fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.”

It’s not just Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones who’ll be stars of the show: appearing alongside them are Wyatt Russell who gained fame after appearing in Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter SoldierAvatar and Terminator star Sam Worthington, and Denise Gogh, who won an Olivier acting opposite Garfield in the hugely acclaimed Broadway play Angels In America.

With the star studded cast and Garfield’s first meaty television role, Under The Banner of Heaven looks to be one of the highlights of TV this year, and another great true crime binge watch. The four part mini series is currently scheduled to release its first episode on 28th April, with the following episodes released in the weeks after.
