Tom Kerridge has certainly gotten a taste for the finer things in life of late. First he launches Kerridge’s Bar & Grill in The Corinthia, one of London’s swankiest hotels, and now he’s riding the golden escalators at Harrods as part of his new daily commute. He’s come a long way since his pub days! Or has he?

Firstly, let’s not kid ourselves that Kerridge’s Michelin starred Hand and Flowers in right-side-of-the-tracks Marlow is rocking a fruit machine and a darts ladder, but the flip side is that the new Harrod’s opening isn’t the caviar-infused diamond sprinkled offering that I know you were dreading the moment you read the headline. Far from it. It’s about as man-of-the-people as the great chef himself: a chippy.

Kerridge is a national hero and can do no wrong in my very biased view, so when I heard he’s opening a new gaff over at Harrods I couldn’t help inwardly eyeroll, predicting it was the start of that well trodden celeb-chef slide as the West Country gent goes trans-Atlantic and opens a string of glitzy-yet-generic restaurants on the strips in Vegas, Dubai and so on. What a fool I was to doubt the great man.

Of course Kerridge is opening something unique and special and who cares if it’s in the same building as a concession selling Lear Jets or gold plated commodes?

So what does a Tom Kerridge take on a traditional chippy look like?

Set in the upmarket Knightsbridge brick-a-brac and trinket store’s Food Hall, Kerridge’s Fish & Chips will have 24 covers (16 while social distancing lasts) and offer a premium  ‘gourmet’ seafood menu.

According to the chef “The dishes champion the highest quality ingredients, including incredible lobster, oysters and fish from some of the best suppliers in Britain. They are all cooked to perfection and served with sensational sides, such as the Triple Cooked Chips topped with an option of Matson curry sauce and cheese, plus Lobster Thermidor, Morecombe Bay Shrimps or Caviar – what unbeatable combinations!”

It’s all part of a broader redevelopment of the Grade II listed Food Halls, the culmination of a four year refurb that included the addition of a chocolate hall and Kerridge’s Fish & Chips will sit alongside Caviar House & Prunier, The Grill, The Sushi Bar, Indian Kama by Vineet, and Pasta Evangelists, making it a foodie destination that won’t break the bank.

After all, you’ll need the change for that Lear Jet you saw on your way in…
