Josef Sheekey was an oyster trader in the late 1800s in Shepherd’s Market. In 1896, the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury and then Prime Minister, Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, granted him a licence to open his first fish and seafood restaurant in St Martin’s Court. “Sheekey’s” was born. Its four inter-connecting rooms are hung with original photographs of actors from the 20th century that reflect its central position in the theatre world. Both casts and audiences flock here for immaculately sourced and perfectly prepared seafood – dressed crab, shellfish and the famous fish pie – and to continue the evening’s entertainment.

An excellent wine list compliments the menu, offering a wide variety of wines served by the glass, carafe or bottle. The list of Champagne, sparkling wines and sherry also hits the mark. The terrace stretches along the lion’s share of St Martin’s Court and has been designed in shimmering turquoise and vibrant raspberry. Seating 50 people, there is a perfect mix of formal (on the restaurant side) and informal (on the Atlantic Bar side) dining. Open all day from midday to late, the terrace is ideal for al fresco dining in summer, and fully equipped with heaters and blankets for the winter months.
