The Handbook’s monthly Fashion Heroes returns for April, featuring everything from pretty pastel swimwear to cool wedding guest looks and high street bargains too good to pass up…

Peony’s Tie-Back Dress

Peony Tie-Back Dress, £330 at NET-A-PORTER.COM

As I get older I’m trying to invest in a summer/holiday wardrobe with key pieces I can return to time and time again. It’s easy to buy throwaway things as soon as the city gets even whiff of a heatwave or I have a holiday on the horizon, but, as we all should be, I’m trying to buy better and buy less. Resort and swimwear brand Peony ticks all of those boxes with their off-white, tired dress. Made from low-impact linen and worked into a timeless cut, it will go with everything from bare feet on the beach to sandals and gold jewellery come evening.

Zara’s Crochet Co-Ord

This adorable little co-ord may be high street but I know I’ll wear it for summers to come. I’ll be wearing as a duo, naturally, with barely-there tie-ankle sandals in the city and separately for maximum cost per wear. The shorts, with a pinstripe oversized shirt and the blouse open over a swimsuit by the pool – I’ve size up in both for a more relaxed feel.

The perfect co-ord for summer in the city. Size up for a more relaxed feel.

Marcéla London’s Signature Khaki Trench Coat

And because I know the good weather is bound to be short lived, here’s something more practical for Britain’s April showers. Marcéla London’s Signature Trench might just be the trench to end all trenches. Oversized with stunning craftsmanship and detailing, a flattering cinched wast, fluidity with some structure, it covers all bases.

The London-based brand offer a lesson in minimalist tailoring and it’s worth checking them out for wide-leg tailored trousers, keep-forever power blazers and near-perfect shirts, too.

Added to wish list immediately.

April’s fashion outlook feels more cheerful than it has in a long time, as there’s hope of holidays and proper summer events making a return for good. From Zara’s cool zebra print suit – never thought a zebra print suit would work but here we are – that’s perfect for an alternative wedding guest look, to Simone Rocha’s pastel-hued floral mini dress with a collar so oversized it’s giving any Ganni dress a run for its money, there’s plenty to peruse for all budgets.

Speaking of, Ganni have teamed up for a sure-to-sell-out collaboration with New Balance. There’s currently a waiting list for the chunky dad-style sneakers bringing together the performance of the sportswear brand and the colour and playful print of Ganni.

For vintage-lovers out there, check out Pikol, a menswear brand that makes retro-style Cuban shirts out of old vintage tablecloths, antique linen sheets or blankets. The results are charming, one-of-a-kind, conversation starting pieces. Alexa Chung is already a fan and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these.

Other heroes include the prettiest pink woven swimsuit by Isa Boulder at MATCHESFASHION.COM; Prada’s Insta-hit raffia tote – eye-wateringly expensive but just so good; and Paper London’s joyful candy striped Emely dress.
