It’s boiling. Sweltering. The weather is exceeding record temperatures with today apparently being the hottest day in London ever. Like ever ever. And, us Londoners cannot cope. There are countries and then there’s hot countries, and the UK just isn’t one of them. We’re moaning, groaning and wondering when it’s all going to be over.
So in a bid to alley our anxiety over the heat, and as an excuse to look at destinations, we’ve scoured the planet to find countries that are normally hotter than London but where right now we’re winning the race, red-faced and sweat dripping from every part of our body. Without further ado, here’s where you should go if you’re looking to cool down from London temperatures…
Commonly associated with honeymoons and a hit with influencers, the Maldives are actually only 31 degrees right now. So I guess it’s only to be expected that newly weds will start flocking to Blackpool beach or rent out a caravan at Camber Sands if the British weather keeps this up.
As the the Maldives, the land of white sands, warm Indian Oceans and silt houses, we’ve all seen pictures regularly turn up on our Insta feeds one-to-many times, making us double-tap with envy. It looks and sounds the real deal doesn’t it? I certainly know where I’d rather be in this heat…
Currently rainy, stormy and only 29 degrees, even Sri Lankan storms sound like a dream right now. Think crystal clear waters, sandy bays and sun-kissed palm trees, jealous yet? Let’s face it, the best London’s got is a few pop up kid-infested urban “beaches” or some suspicious sounding lidos with all sorts of floaties bopping around and not always the good kind…
If you’ve never visited Sri Lanka, why the heck not (well, the cost, distance and fear of terrorism perhaps)? But just the beaches and cuisine alone are worth visiting for! The beaches are often nestled behind blankets of palm trees, with shores perfect for catching a wave (and cooling down), while their food is rich in flavour and spice. Think dosas, curries, and sweet and sour parcels of fish.
The land of Hawaiian shirts, floral garlands and cheesy Hollywood romcoms. Yep, even Hawaii is colder than London right now. Only reaching a measly 31 degrees at the height of the day, now who’s laughing?
I feel like Hawaii was once the go to place where all your dreams came true, and The Handbook, we’re still mahoosive fans of the US state (that’s what people are calling it nowadays right?). Whether you’re after a relax on the shores pina colada in tow, or a hike up a volcanic mountain (rather you than me), Hawaii has it all except London’s weather right now. Ha.
Move over Delhi, you’re only 31 degrees.
You might have your stunning temples, colourful bazaars and freakin’ amazing cuisine. Actually that sounds pretty damn good to me. Delhi, the capital of India, is said to be one of the oldest cities in the world. You’ll find a blurring of communities, cultures and cuisines here, steeped in tradition. I know I’d certainly rather be eating a traditional biryani or some butter chicken, but instead I’m baking in front of a tiny fan shared between the four.
While Brazil’s olympic opening ceremony may have trumped London’s back in 2016, their temperatures are struggling to keep up with us today coming in at a mediocre 25 degrees. That makes London a whole 12 degrees hotter (at least!).
Brazil is home to the wildest street party of all: Rio Carnival. Thousands of performers, locals and tourists flood in every year to dress up in extravagant costumes and parade through the city, held between the Friday afternoon before Ash Wednesday and Ash Wednesday at noon, making the beginning of lent. It’s bizarre, it’s brilliant, it’s Brazil.
You might have the hills, sea and scenery but you’re barely reaching 31 degrees right now Thailand, so we win.
When you think of Thailand, the first place to spring into your mind is probably Bangkok, and while it’s a city that’s definitely worth a visit, the constant sound of beeping tuk tuks are a little too much to handle in the heat (not that we’d rather be sweltering on the underground right now either…). Venture out of the capital and you’ll find a whole new world awaiting your arrival. Our favourite spot is Khao Sok National Park, known for being one of Thailand’s most beautiful wildlife reserves, so you might see an Elephant or two strolling the paths…
Hey, look! London’s even hotter than the land of the glitz and the glam right now! Los Angeles, you’re peaking at 31 degrees while we’re basking over here in sunny London. Even the rich and famous will be jetting over to soak up some of London’s rays, just you watch.
That being said, I know where I’d rather be, and it’s not stuck inside without a sea breeze rushing through my hair. Explore the stomping grounds of Leonardo Dicaprio, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie as you wander down Hollywood Boulevard, or live your very own Baywatch moment on Malibu beach.
