Lily-Rose Depp Stars In The Horror Remake Nosferatu

28th November 2024 | By Rufus Punt

Halloween might be over and done with- but what might be the scariest film of the year hasn’t released yet. Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers and a remake of the highly influential 1922 silent film, releases in January in the UK following its premiere in the US in December. It retells the story of a young woman who becomes the object of obsession for an ancient vampire, and stars Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe. Here’s all to know:

What is Nosferatu about?

The original film is now over a hundred years old and has become a hugely important film in cinema history. While remakes are usually controversial, the new version of Nosferatu is being directed by Robert Eggers, whose previous work includes The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman, all of which were acclaimed. So what’s the film about, plot-wise? It’s essentially a retelling of the novel Dracula, but due to rights issues back in the 20s, the title was renamed Nosferatu. Lily Rose Depp plays Ellen Hutter, a young woman living in a small German town in the 1800s, and catches the attention of an ancient and terrifying vampire, Count Orlok (Skasgård). The vampire begins to stalk her, bringing terror and darkness to the town.

Thomas Hutter (Hoult) the husband of Emma and a young real estate agent, travels to Count Orlok’s remote home in the mountains, awakening him and causing him to once again spread fear through the world. As he begins to stalk Emma and traps Thomas, is there any way for the evil being to be stopped? Other townsfolk we meet include Professor Albin (Willem Dafoe), who seems to have knowledge of the vampire’s history, alongside Aaron Taylor Johnson and Emma Corrin as Friedrich and Anna, another couple.

Is there a trailer, and when does the film release?

Nosferatu, like Eggers’ other films, looks like it’ll be darkly stylish, with a strong gothic influence (as you’d expect from a vampire tale), and intense performances from Depp, Dafoe and the others. The official trailers have been fairly cryptic so far as to how the film expands on the original, and it’s safe to say it’ll be a scary time. All marketing for the film has also made the deliberate decision to not show Count Orlok properly, depicting him as a shadowy figure, keeping the depiction by Skarsgård, who previously played the monster in IT, under wraps. The film arrives in cinemas on 3rd January in the UK after a Christmas Day debut in the US, and you can watch the trailer below.
