The Handmaid’s Tale Opera
There are some things you can predict but an opera production dedicated to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t one of them. But it’s happening!
Taking over the London Coliseum for a ten-day run, Poul Ruders’s adaptation transports you to the dystopian world, known as the Republic of Gilead. It’s a space where women are stripped of their freedom, with the story following Offred, a Handmaid forced to reproduce with Commanders of the Republic.
Highlighting the major themes noted in both the book and TV adaptation, the opera’s score will be minimalist, haunting and eerie, with the actors draped in red gowns.
