This year we’ve had both the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black released in cinemas and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown set to arrive in December- and now there’s news that Britney Spears will finally be getting the Hollywood film treatment. It’s early days yet, but the film will focus on the singer’s life and career, and partly adapts her own memoir. Here’s all to know so far:

What will the Britney biopic be about?

There’s not been many stars as fanatically covered in the media as Britney has, and yet it still feels like a big deal that she’s getting a full-length biopic amongst a slew of other stars getting the same. It’s reported that her memoir The Woman in Me, which released in October last year to huge sales, praise from critics and plenty of new insights into the star’s career, will serve as part of the basis of the film. Universal Pictures won the rights to produce the film, and they’ve tapped the director of Crazy Rich Asians John M Chu to helm the project. Everything from the earliest part of her career in the spotlight like The Mickey Mouse Club, mega-hits like Oops!…I Did It Again and Toxic, to her troubles with the paparazzi and media coverage is set to be potentially included.

Has anyone been cast as Britney?‌

The big question is- who’s going to play Britney? Currently, we have next to no idea, so expect it to be big news once it’s finally confirmed. It’s possible that a huge name, will be cast (like Timothée Chalamet in A Complete Unknown) or the director will choose someone more up and coming, similar to the casting of Marisa Abela in Back to Black. Already names like Emma Roberts and Millie Bobby Brown have been thrown around, but right now we’ll just have to wait and see. Then there’s the question of who’ll play other notable faces in the singer’s life and career- like Justin Timberlake, who Britney talks about candidly in The Woman in Me, and again we don’t know yet. One thing that is confirmed at least is that the project has the approval of Spears herself, who tweeted that she’s been working on the project and that there’ll be more info soon.

What else do we know?

‌The currently untitled biopic is currently in development, and will not release until earliest at the end of 2025, and more likely sometime in 2026.
