Ditch The Plastic: The Best Refillable Shampoo & Conditioners On The Market

In an effort to be more sustainable and friendly to the environment, many hair care brands are helping to reduce the excessive use of plastic by adding refill options to their range. From beauty giants OUAI and Kiehl’s to more affordable options like Fiils, there are so many options to choose from.
You don’t need us to tell you how bad the damaging effects of one-use product bottles are to the environment, but this is a way you can help do your bit, all while stocking up on your favourite refillable shampoo and conditioners. It’s never been easier.
Read on to find out our favourite top-up hair care products.
Kiehl’s
Kiehl’s too has added a selection of refillable hair and body products to their offering, helping to combat the issues surrounding the overuse of plastic.
Adopting the same refill style as many, their offering will see you enjoying your favourite formulas in 81% less plastic packaging, which is a huge achievement for such a large, iconic cosmetics brand. Use up your last scraps of your 500ml bottle and then refill it with their new pouches.
Fans of Kiehl’s can get their hands on refill Amino Acid Shampoo and Conditioner. These products combined aim to help cleanse, soften and volumise your locks, all while adding that all important shine. The shampoo combines naturally derived coconut oil and amino acids to help give you that full-bodied look, while the conditioner adds in jojoba oil to maintain your hair’s strength and manageability.
Fiils
Changing the way we wash, Fiils is a brand new refill beauty company that’s helping to eradicate the overuse of plastics, one refill container at a time.
With sustainability at the forefront, they’ve created a brand that’s eco-friendly. Rather than using plastic bottles for their soaps, shampoos and body washes, they use refill packaging that you can then top up your reusable bottle, which is made from aluminium.
Their range is simple and made from 99% organic, natural ingredients. Choose from their single refill packages, from hand soaps to body washes, shampoos to conditioners, or opt for their bundle package and top up your bathroom supplies in one go. Their shampoo incorporates pure lemongrass oil and seaweed extract to help stimulate your senses, scalp and for added detoxification, while the conditioner is blended with organic ingredients including coconut oil, aloe vera and shea butter to give you that dreamy shine.
To save you some extra buck, they also have subscription packages which both saves you money and saves you making another annoying trip to your local corner shop the moment you run out of hand soap.
OUAI
We’re longtime fans of OUAI. We’re always raving about our love affair with their cleansers and body creams, but this time, we want to steer your attention to their refill selection.
Beauty giants OUAI have introduced a shampoo and conditioner refill option for their ever-growing offering. Much like their regular bottles, these target your hair in all the right ways. For those with thinner hair, look to their fine hair cheveux fins shampoo and conditioner. Combined these will leave your hair feeling silky smooth, revived and fuller.
These refill bottles come in 946ml and are an easy, more affordable and sustainable way to stock up on your favourite shampoos.

The Body Shop
The Body Shop has always been known for producing ethically made products, inspired by the natural world. This year, they’ve gone one step further on their environmental mission by rolling out refill stations across 400 of their stores globally, with the intention of introducing another 400 in 2022.
The movement comes as a way to increase customers’ awareness of the issues surrounding overuse and allows them to adopt sustainable hacks in an easy, more digestible way. As they put it, they are ‘helping you eliminate waste before it hits the bathroom shelf’. By switching to refill you’ll be able to help their mission of saving over 25 tonnes of plastic per year – that’s equivalent to 21 MINI Coopers.
All you need to do is pick up one of their aluminium bottles at a selected store, ask a member to help you fill up your favourite refillable haircare, shower gel or hand wash and enjoy. For shampoo options, their ginger and shea ranges will be available to refill, helping to keep your locks healthy and happy.
Hairstory
Helping you clean with a conscience is Hairstory, the American haircare brand that’s helping to rewrite the rules of beauty norms in every which way they can.
While most shampoos are harmful to the environment and your hair, Hairstory makes products that’ll leave you without toxins and aims to keep your hair nourished, shiny and oil-free for longer.
Along with packing their products with harm-free ingredients, they are also doing their bit to be more sustainable too and that includes their packaging. Their refill system helps to reduce plastic consumption by 91% and with a formula that allows you to wash your hair less without getting greasy, it’s a win-win.
Faith in Nature
Sure, these aren’t the prettiest or most sheek looking refill bottles around but they certainly do the job. Plus, they last a whole lot longer than most as they can hold an epic five litre worth of product.
Faith in Nature pride themselves on being made in the UK, vegan, 100% recyclable, cruelty-free and made with 100% natural fragrance. There’s not much these guys can’t do. Their refill offering is the same. Their large bottles are 100% recycled and reused, and allow you to pick up your favourite shampoos, conditioners, hand washes and body washes more easily.
Choose from their natural flavours, including lavender and geranium, grapefruit and orange, coconut, and wild rose.
They are also stocked in loads of eco-friendly independent stores too, where you can refill your empty bottles yourself. Find your local store here.

Milly & Sissy
Helping you do your bit for the cause is Milly & Sissy. Set up by two friends, the hair and body care brand has a unique take on the refill shampoo world. Unlike typical shampoo, theirs comes in a sachet and requires to be mixed with water. Once the water is added, it’ll create a 500ml worth of product. Pretty nifty.
If you’re worried about the results, don’t be. This fun take on zero waste shampoo will leave your hair feeling super soft and smelling great too. The powder comes in a compostable sachet too!
Made with 99% natural ingredients, this is one product you can trust.
