Fool Me Once

It’s a good time to be a mystery fan: from shows like Yellowjackets Season 2 and Poker Face to gripping film releases like Luther: The Fallen Sun, fans of whodunnits and howcatchems are spoilt for choice when it comes to streaming. Netflix is adding another mystery drama to your watchlist with its upcoming series Fool Me Once, made by the same talent behind Stay Close, The Stranger and Safe. Michelle Keegan stars as a woman who’s just lost her husband Joe (Richard Armitage)- only to find him apparently reappear on her daughter’s nanny cam.

An adaption of the novel of the same name by Harlan Coben, Fool Me Once centres around Maya Stern, a now-retired special ops pilot who returned home from war. Her husband Joe was brutally murdered a few weeks ago, and she’s in the process of grieving and caring for her two-year-old daughter. Setting up a new nanny cam one day to keep an eye on her daughter whilst at work, everything seems to be going fine, until she notices her daughter playing with her dead husband. Maya is shocked, but is she really seeing what she thinks she’s seeing, is it just what she wants to see?

The cast also includes Adeel Akhtar (Ali & Ava, Enola Holmes) as Detective Sergeant Sami Kierece, who’s currently leading the investigation into the murder of Joe, who has his own secrets to hide. To make things more curious, Maya’s nephew and niece, Daniel and Abby, have also lost their mother, who was murdered several months earlier. The chance that the two cases are connected is too much to ignore, and Maya begins to try and find answers, while also grappling with her past. AbFab star Dame Joanna Lumley also appears as Joe’s mother, Judith. While the original novel was set in the US, Netflix’s Fool Me Once will take place in Britain, and has been filming in Manchester and around the north of England.

Harlan Coben described the series as “a pulse-pounder — a shocking story of how secrets and deceit have the power to bring people together while simultaneously tearing them apart.” It’s set to release later this year and will be in eight-hour-long parts.
