Who doesn’t love a good legal thriller? Juror #2, in cinemas this month, stars Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) as a journalist who is called up to serve jury duty.

The case he’s involved in is a much-publicised murder trial – and one which his conflicted judgement could have a serious impact on. Also starring Toni Collette (The Staircase), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Zoey Deutch (The Outfit), here’s everything you need to know:

What is Juror #2 about?

Directed by Clint Eastwood, Juror #2 follows Hoult as Justin Kemp, a journalist who is a recovering alcoholic, and married to Allison (Deutch). He’s summoned for jury duty one day as he and his wife are expecting the birth of their first child, and despite reservations about the fact he’ll be away from his family, he fulfils the obligation. The case however proves to be tricky; with potentially serious consequences for those involved: a murder case involving a former criminal (portrayed by Gabriel Basso), who is accused of killing his girlfriend. What disturbs him is he begins to feel sure that he himself has a personal connection to the case- the alleged murder occurred just after the couple were out at the same bar that Justin was also present at that night, and the journalist worries that he had more to do with the incident than he thought.

With a legal duty to be present at the case, Justin becomes stuck in a difficult moral dilemma. Owning up to his concerns, if they’re not just paranoid thoughts, could result in him being called as a witness and potentially being prosecuted himself. But if he tries to push the thoughts to the back of his mind and let them slide, he could be condemning a man to a harsh sentence. Seeking advice from anyone he can find in an often hard-to-navigate legal system, and dealing with both his recovery from alcoholism and the impending birth of his child, Justin tries to make sense of a very difficult legal dilemma.

Who else stars, and when does Juror #2 release?

Colette plays the Assistant DA prosecuting the case, while Simmons plays a homicide detective and court witness, and Kiefer Sutherland (Designated Survivor) stars as Justin’s Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor. Juror #2 is currently on a limited release in cinemas and will release on streaming later this year on Apple TV+.
