The Handbook

Fancy escaping the overcrowded, smog infested city but a sun-kissed sandy stay isn’t tickling your fancy? Well, how about heading to one of the world’s most serene forest stays for a night or two? Whether you want to be swinging up high above an African bush, channeling your inner ET in a spaceship-esque treehouse, or basking in a hot spring over in Colorado, we’ve rounded up our seven favourite luxury forest resorts around the world…

Lion Sands Game Reserve, South Africa

Think of yourself as a bit of an adventurer? Why not bask in the warm African winds, soak up the untouchable views of the Sabie River, and listen to the animals’ whistles and howls when you book in at Lion Sands Game Reserve. It’s here you’ll be able to channel your inner adventurer, watching the wildlife from above in your luxury cabin-style treehouse.

By day, you’ll be grabbing your khaki pants and walking boots (not the most glamorous we’ll admit), and watching the wild come to life. But you’ll soon be strolling along the candlelit path up to your silt house, surrounded by an African bush, for an evening of wildlife spotting, sunset picnicking and becoming engulfed by the shooting stars as you lie back in your open air bedroom for the night.

Pedras Salgadas Spa & Nature Park, Portugal

Looking more like something from 3019 rather than 2019, architect Luis Rebelo de Andrade certainly went to town on the tree house designs at Pedras Salgadas Park. Nestled deep in the park in northern Portugal, these super modern houses were designed in such a way to blend in with the surroundings, covered in slate and wood, to help roster focus on the 100 year-old park.

Inside, there’s a window, overlooking the forest area, so you can watch the world go by, or gaze up at the shooting stars through the ceiling window. The tree house is equipped with a double bed, sofa, kitchenette area, and bathroom. While the path leading up to the house is more reminiscent of a spaceship runway.
